Time Management Tips For IAS Exam Preparation

UPSC Civil Services is one of the most sought-after career option by the youth in our country. It is because of the prestige attached to the services, self-development and job fulfilment that one derives, that most of the people choose to take up the UPSC Civil Services Exam and become IAS officer. The Civil Service Examination is conducted in three stages. The first stage is the prelims examination, followed by Civil Services Mains Exam and the last one being the Personality Test. Those candidates who remain successful in clearing all the three levels of examination are allotted the services of their choice, taking into consideration, their ranking in the final merit list prepared by the UPSC.

Though it is of the popular belief that clearing the Civil Services examination in one attempt is impossible, a well-defined preparation strategy, time management and consistency can sail you through this examination without much difficulty. Despite the vastness of the UPSC Civil Services Examination syllabus, one can cover the entire syllabus in a year’s time with proper guidance. However, a strong sense of commitment, determination and a proper strategy are required to crack this exam. This article presents a few tips for managing time during the IAS Exam preparation as it is one of the most crucial aspects to be taken care of during preparation:

1. Set realistic targets and timelines for completion of the Syllabus: The IAS syllabus is huge. However, it must be noted that the syllabus for both the prelims examination and the mains examination is indicative. The questions that appear in the exams would be well within the periphery of the UPSC. One must set a timeline for covering the syllabus such that there is at least two months’ time for revision before the prelims examination.

2. Prepare a timetable for the daily activities: The overwhelming seems manageable when one is organized. Preparing a timetable helps in covering the syllabus in an effective and efficient manner. By consistently following a timetable, key tasks could be turned into habits over a period of time. It is necessary to be rigid about the timelines for completing the subjects while leaving room for some flexibility for changes to be made in the daily timetable with respect to covering the subjects.

3.  Strictly follow the UPSC syllabus: The aspirants are often misled by the hearsay that the UPSC syllabus contains everything under the Sun and beyond. While the fact remains that the syllabus is indicative. An aspirant can benefit from strictly sticking to the syllabus while studying.

4.    Make judicious use of the internet: The Internet is a vast ocean of resources, especially for the UPSC current affairs preparation. Every doubt can be cleared with just a click. There are many websites that also aid the preparation, as the resources are prepared by veterans. Choose a few websites and follow them regularly. Make sure that your precious time is not spent on unnecessary details and in-depth study of a topic.

5.     Make time for hobbies and leisure: “All work, no play makes Jack a dull boy”. One has to understand the importance of rest, to be able to function effectively. To learn, remember and understand better, 6-7 hours of sleep and breaks are imperative. Leisure would make the preparation less monotonous.
